Our very own masterpiece: The Akwa Ibom Stadium

When it comes to Africa so often we are used to hearing negative stories and in Nigeria it is no different,That is why it is so important that we dedicate just as much of our time to highlighting positive things shaping our country as we do in showing the negative things.

One such positive thing is the brand new Godswill Akpabio International Stadium or the Akwa Ibom Stadium as it is still known to some, The 30,000 seater modern infrastructural masterpiece almost feels like a dream. The stadium is complete with several modern features such as media facilities, electronic scoreboards and a VIP area. I am personally relishing the opportunity to visit the stadium.

The stadium which is located in our very own city of Uyo is a real thing of beauty and something which will likely soon become a recognisable landmark for the city.

The stadium which is said to be based on the German Allianz Arena which is home of German football giants Bayern Munich was completed in 2014 after three years of construction. The type of vision and leadership demonstrated in bringing this project to fruition should be applauded especially as we have seen projects of this nature in the past such as the Teslim Balogun Stadium which did not bear such positive results.

In a short space of time the stadium has already seen itself become the home ground of both Nigerian professional football league giants Akwa United and our very own senior national football team. The Godswill Akpabio International Stadium definitely has the potential to inspire future generations and deserves to truly be called our very own masterpiece.
